map-democratic-republic-of-the-congoThe Democratic Republic of the Congo is the second largest country in Africa, and the 7th most populated. Known for its very rich mineral resources, particularly cobalt, which is used in the production of nearly all smartphones worldwide. DR Congo also produces a huge supply of thin metals to the world. With its abundance in mineral resources, it should be one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Sadly it is not, and hovers closer to the bottom of the scale of poverty stricken nations. Torn apart by over 20 years of war, education in DR Congo particularly has been hit hard. Children have resorted to working rather than attending school, meaning they are missing out on not only their right to education, but their childhood.

This is where ACT comes in. At the start of the year ACT decided to expand its help to children in DR Congo. Since January, we have been working at the Lighthouse School in Lubumbashi, in partnership with the Congolese charity CEEJ and Central African Missions International UK (CAM), who are well established in the area.

The Lighthouse School is a part of CAM’s ‘Lighthouse Project’, which acts as a training centre for disadvantaged young people in Lubumbashi. The project encompasses its own recognised church, an annual youth camp, a primary school, and a secondary school which specialises in sewing. ACT shall be supporting orphaned children attending the schools, covering the costs of necessities such as school fees and supplies, meals, and exam fees, starting with six children.

Lubumbashi lies in the south-east of DR Congo, and as of cd2012, the population was fast approaching 1.8 million. Despite education in DR Congo being free, many parents cannot afford to send their children to school, due to the costs incurred by materials, uniforms and other such fees. As the second largest city in the country, this means that there are vast amounts of children unable to attend school. With your support, ACT can help to give children their right to education. DR Congo is a nation with so much potential, which can be unlocked with a little generosity and help. A little goes a long way.

For just £15 a month you could sponsor a child at the Lighthouse School, and cover their educational fees. To set up a regular donation – or a one off gift – you can do so here:

Thank you once again for your continued support.
