For a number of fun loving ACT supporters, Sunday 17th July was no ordinary Sunday. Everyone was up and out of bed early to make their way to Kingston for the Dragon Boat Challenge fundraising event.
ACT takes part in this event each year, which is organised by the Kingston Rotary Club. This year, teams from 60 different charities took part and raced against each other on the Thames River whilst fundraising for different causes.
For many in the ACT team, it was their first experience of actually rowing a dragon boat. The day started off with a briefing on rowing techniques, health and safety, and then it was time to put on the life jackets and get into the boat.
Each team raced three times and each race was an opportunity to pull our weight as a team, which we did by following the beat of the drum. Sadly, we missed out on a place in the final, but everyone enjoyed themselves and some are already planning how to improve their time next year!
In just a few days ACT has already raised more than £200 through sponsorship with more donations expected. Our target is £1,500. The funds raised will allow ACT to reach more vulnerable children and needy widows in Africa, helping them to access an education and generate income, bringing hope for a better life.
Sharon, one of our Dragon Boat Racers explains why she got involved with ACT and this event:
“I was inspired to get involved after hearing a talk about ACT’s work with orphaned children in various African countries – we know being an orphan in Africa can be a completely different thing to being one in the UK – a child can really be on their own and at risk so I was really touched by the way ACT helps children stay in school, some right through to university”
Thank you to all the rowers who took part and represented ACT and everyone involved in organising our participation.
We are still accepting donations, so if you can help us achieve our sponsorship target you can donate here.
