Jane is a very bright 14 year old who lives in the Donge area of Tanga, Tanzania with her mother, Domina. She is the eldest of 3 children.
Just before ACT started supporting the family in May 2002 Domina had received an eviction order from the landlord and given 30 days in which to quit the room they were renting and where they shared facilities with other tenants. The timely support from ACT enabled Domina to complete the work on the very modest 2 room house, which her husband had started prior to his death in 2001.
Jane has ambitions for her life and hope one day to become a doctor. She is in Form 1 at Mkwakwani Secondary School and is doing very well.
Jane’s mother, Domina is an assistant in the local library but her income is so meagre that it does not provide enough to pay for the children’s education. Although well over 65 per cent of children in Tanzania enrol in primary school, less than 10 per cent move on to secondary school because education at this level is not free.
