Zambia

Zambia is a land locked country that borders with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania to the north, Angola and Namibia to the west, Malawi and Mozambique to the east and Botswana and Zimbabwe to the south. The country is listed as one of the poorest countries in the world. Education is unaffordable for many families, particularly those who live in rural areas. Parents are expected to pay school fees and also to purchase uniforms and books, which are expensive.

ACT is working in partnership with local churches and schools in Chingola, Ndola, Mufulira, Solwezi and Lusaka.

Chingola, Ndola and Mufulira are in the northern copper belt of Zambia, close to the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire). The downturn in the price of copper on the world market has led to closure of mines and related industries and has had a severe effect on the economy of these towns. There is very high unemployment in this region. Solwezi is a town in the north east.

Lusaka is the capital of Zambia. ACT’s partners in Lusaka are Good Samaritan School which is situated in one of the shanty towns on the outskirts of Lusaka.
