It was a great start to the celebration of the ACT 20th Anniversary at London Spitalfields Market Pop-up-Africa event on bank holiday Monday 28th May.

Pop-up-Africa is an all-day event that celebrates and showcases African culture, art, music, cuisine and handmade merchandise. It takes place each year at London Spitalfields Market on the second bank Holiday Monday and is an event not to be missed for anyone wanting to experience African market culture away from Africa.

We were delighted to be selected as one of Pop-up-Africa’s charity for 2018. As such, the ACT stall was situated in the middle of the market, surrounded by vibrant stalls selling an assortment of gorgeous handmade goods and treats. The atmosphere was equally alive with the sound of drums, music and people engaging in spirited conversation – a truly African market environment.

The ACT stall was busy all day. Having been set up by our dedicated staff and volunteers, they spent the day talking to people and raising awareness about our work. Of course we used the opportunity to swing about our bucket to collect donations from the generous members of the public. As well as holding a raffle draw, we sold jewellery, fabric table mats, and hand carved key rings, made by widows in Burkina Faso and Uganda that ACT support.

Alongside our stall we had the “ACT Heads or Tails”, a game modelled on the Game of Life. It attracted passers-by and many tried their hands at the game which proved to be very popular.  Designed in-house by our communications team, it encouraged participants to see life from the perspective of some of our sponsored children. Several transformational stories of some of those who we have supported provided content for the game, and as such invited participants to experience life through the eyes of these children.

Our main celebration event will take place on the morning of Saturday 6th October at New Life, Croydon and will showcase our work in Africa with an exhibition and followed by a few short presentations. This will include interviews with some of our beneficiary children invited from Africa and will end with a buffet lunch. The event will feature the Portsmouth Gospel Choir, finalist at the BBC Gospel Choir of the year 2017. They also sang for the Queen at the service to celebrate Commonwealth Day in March.
